how do i connect an xbox to old tv with converter?

alright, i have a regular xbox not 360 and i have a tv that does not come with av slots. i have a game converter at least it says and i just cant find out the right way to plug them in and every time i try it the xbox indicated that it does not detect a av cable WHAT DO I DO!!!!!
