How do i connect an x-box 260 headset?

Ok so i bought an x-box 360, resident evil 5 limited edtion, ok so it comes with a headset, that in the manual says you have to attach it to the controller(wireless) (headset is not wireless), but the sound still comes from the television, am i doing something wrong?
 
the settings on the xbox are set to come out of your speakers, you have to change it to headphones only
