How do I clean something contaminated by a a mercury battery leak?

I bought an old camera that I think has been in its leather case for years. When I opened it up I discovered a mercury battery had exploded and leaked inthe battery chamber, and it was caked with residue. I'm worried it might have soaked into the case... should I worry and what do I do?
