How do I buy a car and car insurance?

I want to move out of my parents house and become totally independent. I am 21. I want to buy my own car, which means I also need car insurance. Am I supposed to buy a car FIRST and then go to an insurance company for rate quotes? Or do i get an insurance plan before I buy a car. If I get insurance before I buy a car, dont they need to know what type of car it is before they can get me a quote? But if i get the car before the insurance, how am i going to drive it home without insurance? Im totally confused. please help
