How do i become a little more aggressive when it comes to horse back riding?

How can I et my horse to listen to me more and wake up in general? I was riding him on friday and he was just really slow. I couldn't get him to trot very fast, or canter period. He was perfectly content doing a sitting trot, but as soon as my trainer clicked once, he would canter. Is there a way I can get him to do it with me? I only ride him once a week because i just use him in my lessons, so i can't really go out there during the week and work with him. but when we jump, he's pumped up and ready go, but only when hes right in front of a jump... Any body have any tips on how to get him more forward moving and just respect me in general? It will be greatly appreciated and very helpful
The thing is, i don;t want to have to resort to using artificial aids. I just want him to respect me and actually want to do work with me.
