How do I attach an action to a button in Flash CH4 using Action Script 2.0?

I am just getting started with Flash and what should be a simple thing to do seems impossible. I would like to create a simple Action Script to return the movie to Frame 1 when a button is clicked. The documentation doesn't explain it and nothing I have tried has worked. It will not let me attach an 'on' event directly to the button or attach any event to the button down state.

Right click on the button and select action from the menu, then type the following.

gotoAndStop(1);
}
