director goes crazy? My band director has been trying really hard this year to motivate my 7th/8th grade band class. However, nobody shows any leadership or interest. She's done everything! After quickly deciding that yelling doesn't work, she tried to let us govern ourselves with a big brother-big sister project, where the section leaders helped out those who were struggling. It worked for about a week, but then the section leaders got lazy and didn't do anything. Then, she decided that maybe the right people weren't in charge. So, she created a band council where we voted for our leaders, who do things like help us find our music if we lose it, put up posters preaching constant reminders, etc. We, evidently, chose the wrong people, because they haven't done a single thing since being elected except prance around screeching,"look at me, I'm on the band council!", so that group was dissolved too. She tried calling parents when kids didn't practice, but it went something like this:
DIRECTOR: "Little Johnny didn't practice his instrument. He has a bad sound and doesn't know his music."
PARENT:" Are you saying that my poor little boy isn't PERFECT?!"
DIRECTOR: ....
PARENT: "My adorable little boy can barely pass his academic classes! He's has 70's in math, science, english, and everything else! How do you expect him to find time in his schedule to practice an instrument? You should be ashamed of yourself.
DIRECTOR: "Band is a class too, why is he in it if he can't do his job?"
PARENT: "Band is just for fun! it's not like he's going to major in music. Besides, he's never gotten lower than an 80 in your class, so he has to be doing something right."
Note: My band director is required by the administration to make band "fun". Apparently, you can't have "fun" if you fail, even if you don't do any work whatsoever.
My band director is at her wits end. She asked us what else she can do, but I have NO idea. Please help me!
