How do i add music to my htc phone?

i have a htc phone it is made like the black berry curve but its htc i have it so that i can share the internet with my Laptop that works but i have a USB cord i hooked it up and i looked under devices it is there but when i try to add music with windows media it says connect device but my device is already connected what to do remember i also use my phone to share the internet with my Laptop that means that i have to plug my phone up to the Laptop to use the internet on my Laptop please help
