how do i add more horse power to my car.?

Hey its me again...1996 volkswagen golf gl guy.... thanks for all the suggestions but I think I need some more basic opinions. I'm tryna sponge up all the info I can about my car, (being that this is my first) and I got about 1000 I can put toward my cars proformance. So wat I'm tryna say is what are the very BASIC things I can do for horsepower. A beginners list of sorts is wat I'm looking for. " car proformance for dummies...thanks
