How do I activate a verizon wireless sim card for my blackberry storm?

I have a blackberry storm that I don't currently use but I am going to Thailand for several months and I want to be able to use the storm there. How do I activate the sim card so that I can use it with phone cards/minutes (NOT the verizon network) or is the sim card automatically activated (it came inside the phone I did not buy it seperately) THANKS
