How do fish carry algae and how to avoid it in my tank?

Ok, so 2 yrs ago my friend and i caught a random minnow (i think a bass) from the pond at my house. We for some unknown reason kept him and he is still alive. I had him in a Jar and did a 75% water change every 1 1/2 -2 weeks, and added water in between. he has gotten to be 2x his size (like 1 1/2 inches or so) so i purchased a cheep tank with an airator and undergravel filter. I really want him to have a friend, Like a neon or another small fish, but i worry about algae contaminating the tank. Its winter and i can't catch another minew, and i worry about disease. Is there a way to "de alagetize" another fish or will he spend his life alone? lol. What do you think would be the best solution? another fish and how so safely, or let him stay alone? I will award best answer!
 
well, you can always get a fish that eats algae, if you are willing to buy one. they're not that expensive. i dont really think that fish can carry algae, but that really just depends on the fish. i think small fish would be okay.
 
an algae eater like a pleco or chinese algae eater would do. I've been researching nerite snails and they are beautiful snails that will eat every type of algae in a tank and don't destroy plants. Lastly you can buy chemicals to combat the algae but I never add any chemicals unless it is absolutely necessary.
 
i think a shoal of neon tetras would be a great addition to the tank and im pretty sure they dont carry algae
 
I know that pet stores sell things to take care of algea and to make the water clear petco or petsmart check and see what fish are good for your size tank and witch fsh are more teritorial then others
