How do Businesses work and what is their effect on cities?

I had this really great idea for a board game that I wanna make, but in order to create it properly, I need a basic knowledge of how a city works, as well as business.

Things like Expanding a company, buying another company, buying out a company, selling a company, liquidation, etc. And possibly the stock-market, or having stock for a company...

I also need to know how business affects a city (i.e. for the purpose of the game, if player 1 is a company, they want to buy and privatize say a bus company, or the city train network), and stuff like that.
