How do American Express Platinum benefits work at airline lounges?

Do you have to book your flight through AMEX? or just pay for the flight on AMEX? or can I pay for a flight using a Visa or MC and just show my AMEX Platinum card to get into the airline lounge?

Same question with regards to hotel upgrades. Need to book through AMEX or just pay with AMEX?

What other benefits of this card make it worthwhile. Is there any better deal than the $450 annual fee?

Is a Citicard American Express Platinum the same thing in terms of the benefits available?
 
The only way to get correct answers is to call the customer service number on your card and ask...they are very helpful.
