How difficult and expensive is it to repair/replace an engine subframe in a 1986 Jetta

GL? How difficult and expensive is it to repair/replace an engine subframe in a 1986 Jetta GL?

Is it possible to weld it back together? Is that recommended?

I didn't break it myself. It's a car I'm considering buying and I'm just wondering if it's worth it. The price is right but this is obviously a serious problem. The owner said I could consider welding it back together, and since I am currently taking welding classes, that seemed like something to look in to. Just wondering if that would work, or if replacing it is too difficult/expensive.
