How did you wire in your Zumo?

I posted this in response to another thread in this forum for a fellow installing a zumo 660 on a road glide... maube it will help...

"Before diving in, I looked at the new HD clutch mounting kit, and it looks pretty clean, but my parts guy said it would only work with the HD version of the 660, not the Garmin version...??? WTF is up with that? So didn't even try it, plus my 660 cradle would be hanging on my bars all the time."

BS. I bought a zumo 660 on sale for $599CDN from a local GPS/Ham radio store in Toronto - Radioworld - and after deciding the supplied h/w would not do, I went to my local HD dealer and bought the handlebar mount kit (p/n 92378-09) after seeing it installed on an EG Std. Worked flawlessly on my '07 Ultra. After checking volts and amps with a multimeter, I spliced the 660's power wire into the hot lead off the cigarette lighter to make the electrical connection easier. A little playing with the position of the unit and I can still see the gas gague pretty well.... my $0.02 worth....

Here's what I bought:

KT-STGH-95436 Kennedy Technology Group CellSet MC/GPS-Harley ($225)
KT-DX550-95423 Stereo Device/Mic Harness, Zumo 550 ($95)

The kit worked flawlessly. Took me about 2 hours total. No soldering is required; however, you do have to disassemble two multi-pin connectors, and applying heat-shrink tubing to wires the two plugs on the back of the radio. The instructions are crystal clear... just take it slowly, triple check everything as you go... and no issues. The company is small, extremely helpful, and they have a toll free number to assist you if needed.

I attached a few pics to help you see... in the last one, the black box is the actual cellset installed on top of the radio. As you can see, everything we VERY clearly labeled. If you've never dealt with Harley connectors... add another hour to the project. Also, if you go this way, you can gladly call me for info along the way... like some tips about making the connections.

Lastly, you can download the installation guide from: http://cyclegadgets.com/products/KT/detail.asp?SET=GPSH

take off outer fairing, wire to back of headlight...like Jinks. you can then run the I pod wire through the clutch cable hole...then over to the right side of the handlebars and plug it into radio

I did the handle bar mount today using a RAM and wired directly to batt, and also ran my wires under the gas tank - I was thinking under the console, but then I would have a wire showing towards the front between the tree and the tank.

Down the road I may consider the Fairing mount, I like that idea. I thought the Gas cap was VERY cool, but when I specked it out, looking down was not in my comfort zone. I still think it is a cool and clean look - but functionally for me, na, aint gonna do it, would not be safe - for me anyway!

Next is some LED lights.

I have a question - this was the first time I was under the hood - so to speak - and I saw all those cool wires to/from the battery. There were two lone stray connectors - one was snapped into an empty housing that attached to that tray above the battery, the other was long and gray. Anyone have any idea what those are? I know one of them must be for an accessory hook up, but which one?

TIA - Ride Safe everyone!
