Did you learn from a parent, or from tv, or just picked up a cookbook? Do you prefer baking or cooking?
I grew up with my Grandmother babysitting for me, and she is a serious baker and cook (French). When I was a teenager and it was just my Mom and I she would work late and I would watch the food channel and experiment with different things and she would come home to a giant mess and either a really good supper or a really nasty one. My Grandmother's favorite cookbook was always her old Rumford's, Mom's is Better Homes and Gardens from the 80's, and mine is an old church fundraiser cookbook which is now out of print. I am always on the lookout for interesting cookbooks at the used book store and yard sales.
