How did the violent mechanisms of civilizations advance in the name of enlightenment?

i.e., when explorers like Christopher Columbus came into new lands and tried to convert the natives to their own ways & thinking. These people from "civilized" countries (European) came in and thought they were doing the primitive peoples a favor by helping them realize the "right way" of doing things. This can be seen as contradictory, as this act often results in DISorder (as opposed to civilization) because of resistance from the natives.

Any thoughts?
