How did the military contact relatives who had gone AWOL during the Vietnam war?

Did they stop by the immediate family members house in person or did they simply call to notify relatives? How long did they wait to notify them?
I'm writing a story about it and I am to the point that someone has to contact the wife to let her know that the husband has gone awol. hope someone knows! I would like to be as accurate as possible in the facts...;o)
YEAH! I found the answer. For anyone else who needs this question answered: Ten days, the military will notify NOK of the awol and that any benefits the family receives will be discontinued. The private will be court marshled and have a warrant for his/her arrest. (NOK) IAW AR 630-10, chapter 2, Para 2-3(e) is the official listing for the letter if you want to look it up for an example of the letter.
