How did the environment effect the Mayans?

Basically I'm doing a final project for history class. I forgot which civilization it was but I believe it was the Mayas. I was looking for a Meso-America civilization thats been affected by the mountains. They use it to their advantage by line of sight. So.. what did the Mayas grow? Where they on the mountains? How was the weather there?
