How did Shakespeare affect poetry today?

How did he make a difference in sonnets? What did he do differently than others? Was he the first to do something? Any of these, just how did he affect poetry today. Thanks in advance :)
And for the extremely inconsiderate people out there, no this is not my homework. I'm just curious.
