How did physicists/astronomers come up with an age of the universe?

It was 13.65 the last I heard. But what's a few hundred million years between friends? ☺
The age is calculated ('estimated' is a better term) by working backwards from what we 'see' today and estimating how long it would have taken to get there from a common starting point.
