How did it become customary to end a phone call with "Goodbye"?

I have recently started watching AMC's television series "Mad Men" and I noticed that the characters in the show never end a phone call by saying goodbye, they just hang up. As "Mad Men" is said to represent the timeline of their show historically correct, I am wondering how it changed from just people hanging up the phone at the end of a conversation to saying "goodbye" and then hanging up?
