"how did geography effect the development of the italian civilization"?

They have a TON of coastline which meant huge shipping industry which meant travel and trade.
 
they were long and able to isolate them selves from neighboring nations becuase they were only able to be invaded by sea or by traveling the lenght of the country.
they were also protected by the alps, which were difficult to pass, although not impossible.
