How did ancient civilizations create these huge structures?

For example, the Mayans created their temples, and the Egyptians made the famous pyramids of the desert, both of which existed only for ceremonial reasons. It's said that today these fascinating monuments cannot be remade, even with our advancing technology.

Did they just have to much free time and they spent a dozen generations sculpting them? Or were they helped by beings beyond us?
