How could the military brass come up with such inferior Sherman tank designs in WWII?

The really sad part was that even the modifications were inadequate (high velocity
76 mm gun and a new turret, ...). I'm not sure how many of the 105 mm modifications
(with new turrets) were made and even how effective they were.
In 1943 the British offered the "Firefly" design which used a British gun (17 pounder)
on the original Sherman design (with the original turret)! It could stop both Panzer and
Tiger tanks! Who could ask for more !!! It was a beautiful solution yet somehow the
brass managed to resist. Only after IKE got mad and demanded the Firefly did it
get made and was sent to Europe.
The original Sherman fortunately was more than adequate in the Pacific war.
Many tank crews lost their lives in a tank that the Germans called the Ronsin lighter
because it lit the first time. There were German tank commanders who were
decorated for obliterating over a hundred Shermans.
