Inspired by a thought of mine in another thread, I thought it'd be interesting to have as a full topic.
Anyhow, yeah, Mario isn't quite as popular as he was during the apex of the early 90's, but honestly? I think it's a shame there isn't a new Mario cartoon on TV these days, since I feel the series now has a lot of potential to be a good 'toon.
For one thing, they have enough characters, places and even story inspiration -the Paper/RPG games being one- for plots, instead of relying on movie parodies and ridiculous 'back to Brooklyn' plots (especially since the whole Brooklyn thing has essentially been retconned away thanks to Yoshi's Island 1 and 2 especially) as a crutch.
And the best part is that there'd be no need for any Oogtar-like characters, though I'd guess that Bowser Jr. would suffice on the bad guy side of things. And you've got characters like Daisy and Rosalina (who'd appeal to the girls), Waluigi (comic foil), Professor E. Gadd, Donkey and Diddy Kong and even recurring bad guys like King Boo, Fawful and *winces* Petey Piranha to kinda make it so that Bowser isn't always the villain of the day, so to speak.
Maybe split the show in half with one half being Mario-themed and the other being a 'Wario Ware' segment, or one that has brief, 5 minute stories of Wario's gang in Diamond City. I say 3-5 minutes, since it'd be true to the spirit of the whole 'micro-games' motif of the games themselves.
I dunno, I think it could work if given to the right people. With Nintendo have a semi-renaissance of sorts, I think it's amazing they haven't done more to market their properties outside of games and candy knick-knacks.
