How common is it to have a vegetable garden?

How common is it to have a vegetable garden in a North American suburb? Or even in a more urban area (although I'd assume the garden, on average, would be a lot smaller). In other words, how common is it for a person/family to plant their own vegetables (a least more than 3 types)?
