How come verizon's text sometimes send 3 or 4 times?

Sometimes the text I send people gets sent like 4 times. On my phone It shows that I sent it ONCE and my phone isnt the only one that does that. My friend's phone does the same thing and she also has verizon wireless.
Why is it doing that?
and can I do anything to stop it from sending more than once? because people must think i'm psycho when it sends more than once lol
