How come in your browsing history, some url entries have www and others don't?

Example
I go to http://www.sportingnews.com/
then i click on sportingnews today under and this is what comes up
http://today.sportingnews.com/sportingnewstoday/20090918/?u1=texterity&cache=0yTOHRjKasi4
notice there is now "www" after the http://

this normal? Why is there no "www"
