How can we ever trust the American mainstream media again?

The mainstream media failed Americans in the wake of 9-11, helping to lead the country to war. When we needed them most, before one of the grave decisions a country can make (going to war), they jumped on the patriotic bandwagon hardly questioning the Bush administrations rational for war. The people fell in line. Now we know the rationales for going to war were based on incredible lies. Where was the skepticism? Where was the journalism? The mainstream media failed us, should they ever be trusted again?
