How can we avoid destroying human kind and progress into the next stage of civilization?

According the the physicist Michio Kaku, we are a type 0 civilization, in order to be a type one civilization, we must pass a threshold. We will either cross it, or kill ourselves in the process from nuclear war and generally destroying the earth. Can you think of a solution where we won't end up destroying ourselves?
 
Easy. Don't create killer robots with human brains. What do they teach in schools nowadays?
