How can this happen don't know much about cars?

Ok so i got a 02 Toyota and went to the auto shop because the check engine light was on and after they checked they are telling me someone had reset or deleted the history so they cant really tell anything i just got the car like last week what does that mean or how can i find out when it was deleted
