how can the xbox media center recognize an external hardrive?

i got a external hardrive filled with movies that i would like to be able to view using the xbox to play them. I have a usb adapter and it reads my 2gig flash drive fine, if usb cannot read the hard drive then would adding a second IDE cable from inside the xbox, then taking out the hard drive from the external case and plugging it directly to the xbox work?
