I never travel more than about 30 miles each way. I can get 10p per mile out of my diesel car.
If I go from Darwen to Padiham by BUS on a Saturday and back on a Monday it costs £6 each way. £12! A bus carries 60 people.
If I go from Blackburn to Lancaster by Train and back on the same day it costs £13 and a train carries hundreds of people.
It would cost £2 in diesel in my car for the first trip and £7 for the second - but the trip to Lancaster is unviable for me as the trains stop at 9pm and the main marketing point of public transport is you can have a drink.
I take it no-one can argue that a car would not be the best value option for me.
