How can one get ahead by saving on small purchases, only to be walloped by a big

medical or car repair bill? I save a few bucks by shopping frugally and not purchasing things, only to get hammered by big expenses that push me to the limit.Happens almost every month. Anyone else have the same problem? What do you do to stay ahead of the game?
