How can i Watch Video from Computer to TV? Help, game is tomorrow!?

I am trying to watch the WVU game tomorrow on ESPN 360 on my TV. I have a 1080P LCD TV and laptop computer. I bought the "monitor cable" that connects the laptop to tv thru the PC port. I can see the computer screen on the tv, but when i try to watch a video, it says "video file unsupported." If it will play on my computer, then why wont it play on the tv.... it is just used as a larger monitor, am i correct? I did see a cord that on one side was a Monitor Type hookup and the other side was an HDMI plug. the box said it was to connect and HDMI device to the TV thru the PC port. Can i just use that cable to connect the laptop and its "monitor" plug to the tv thru its HDMI port? seems to me as if it should work, but i dont want to spend 40 bucks on a cable and have to take it back if it doesn't. any and all help will work!
