How can I value my education?

Wise Idiot

I'm finding it really difficult to find the value of my education. I'm right now 20 years old. I still have a lot of skills to develop, mainly personal. I'm guessing a job might be of some use. What are some thoughts on this?

You education is worth the difference in wages that you would have without it, versus the wages you'll get with it.

A lot of people ramble on about how people who go to college, on average, make like a million dollars more than people without a college degree, but many of the people that do go to college with that thinking would have been okay anyhow, starting their own business or whatever, in any case they might be more hard working or smarter, or something to that effect.

However, a college degree doesn't magically mean you'll be better off in life, education is what you make of it, and how you use it. If you just go to college to mess around and don't put anything into it, it probably is a waste of money for you.

On the other hand, there are some jobs that require credentialing to do, for example being a lawyer requires an LLB or JD, being a doctor requires and MD, being a teacher requires a bachelors degree, etc.

You need to think about your own personal situation, instead of following blanket advice that everyone should go to college, or grad school, or anything like that.

If you ca hold even a part time job while you are i college it helps you learn job skills. Getting an internship can help you. Ask an advisor in your department.

Research has shown on the average those with a bachelors will earn $2.2 million dollars more during their working life than those without one. You will earn even more if you get a Masters which is what I recommend everyone does if they can.

Thanks
Bill
