How can I use my current mobile phone overseas?

I am travelling overseas for a holiday soon, and I need to use my phone to contact home. However, I am on a pre-paid with Virgin Mobile and I've heard that I can't access global roaming.

How can make calls home from overseas with my current phone? Can I use a phone card?
