How can I use a shadow fading into the background on Photoshop?

I've duplicated the layer I want, free transformed it and used opacity to make it faint but I want the shadow to gradually fade into the background colour (white), perhaps through a gradient tool, so it doesn't dominate from the image. How do I do this? Thanks to anyone who can help!
