I have a WD My Book Essential, 1 TB, USB 2.0 external hard drive.
I set a password while trying to experiment with the lock function. By some horrible fluke, I guess I typed it wrong when setting it (even though I am very familiar with that password), because when I tried to unlock it the next time, it wouldn't open. Either that or it's something wrong with the WD SmarWare, the software the hard drive uses.
Now after five password tries, it tells me to try to reformat. I know I would lose all my data. Screw that. I just unplug, restart the SmarWare and try 5 more times. I've done this countless times, using misspellings of my original password in the hope that I will get in.
I respect the security around the external hard drive. I KNOW that this kind of thing is set up around them to prevent people from breaking in. I KNOW I am retarded for messing with da system. Blah blah, I just want to try anything. I'm very desperate! I will do whatever it takes to get the data back.
Though I read somewhere that it involves "CIA-level hacking", I don't want to accept that it is impossible to break into this thing just yet.
If you can provide ANY information, whether it is another source or website, or anything at all, I would appreciate it very much. I would appreciate it much more than answers telling me I'm a dumb-dumb for this, which I already know. Thank you.
I can also provide more info if you need it.
