How can I strengthen a sagging rear (moveable) shelf in a hatchback car?

It is especially the edges that no longer have much structural strength, so the shelf flops down into the rear compartment.. I've thought of holding the shelf in position and soaking the edges in super-glue, or making a metal support frame for underneath or using fiberglass to reinforce it.

But maybe someone knows a much more sensible way.

It is an old car, and I would not expect to find a better one from a scrap car.

Thanks for any suggestions.
