How can I stop my new hiking boots raising blisters?

I have a new pair of hiking boots (expensive) and after wearing them for only 20 minutes yesterday I had blisters on both heels. Do any fellow walkers out there have any ideas on how to stop this quickly, such as a substance that could be rubbed on the inside of the boot heel? Short of covering my feet in plasters I am at a loss! Ideas gratefully accepted.

Get a better fitting boot, your heel is lifting inside the boot. A proper fitting boot wont allow the heel to lift inside. Its the rubbing that is causing the blisters. Unless the boots are very stiff and need to be broken in. Protect your heels in the meantime with moleskin or even a piece of duct tape, its like having armored skin. But I would return the boots if you notice your heels lifting inside

2 pairs of socks: 1st pair should be cotton; the outer pair should be wool.
Yes you should wear 2 pairs of socks.

Do them up as tight as its comfortable, then start 'breaking them in'.
