How can I see if my batteries from my gameboy (pocket) are running low?

I once heard something happened with the Power LED. What happens when batteries are low?

the light on the left side of your gameboy will turn from green to red. or im not sure witch gameboy youre talking about. or it might go from a bright red to a faded blinking red.
 
when the batteries get low the light turns from green to a reddish oranges colour
