How can I run more programs and things from the SD card? It seems that some things dont want to run or run properly from the SD card.

I would like to put silo and e reader on the card not in internal memory.

I am new to this (after having a IIIe for several years).

Thanks

Bob

You can use the Palm Quick Install to add applications to your SD card. You can also run applications from the card directly; review the section starting on page 590 of the User's Guide (Chapter 27) .

Unfortunately, I have not found a way to add an application to my Favorites View. That would be real handy. If someone has an answer for that one, I'm all ears!! The only way I know to access an application on the card is to press the Home button twice (brings up the Application View) then in the upper right click on the Application Category Pick List, and select Palm Card from the dropdown menu. Then select the application Icon.

Cheers,
John

There are any number of excellent applications available that will enable you to run applications directly from the SD card. My personal favourite is Zlauncher which solves a number of problems all in one neat package. Beware though, whilst almost any application can be made to run from the card, if it needs to hotsync with the dektop it needs to reside in RAM otherwise it won't update correctly.

I'll echo NickGB's support of Zlauncher. It's an excellent launcher which will allow you to set up categorized tabs to organize all your applictaions. It will also allow you to move applications from RAM to an SD card directly from the launcher with a simple tap-and-hold pop-up menu. You can specify exactly what you want moved to the card (i.e app or app plus associated databases). Zlauncher will create a shortcut to the app in the launcher which you can then simply tap on to launch the app. One caution: in order to actually run the app Zlauncher moves it into internal RAM first as apps cannot actually be run from the card. That means you have to keep enough internal memory free for an individual app to run when it's launched.

While some apps which need to sync with Hotsync may not do so properly if on the card, I don't think that is true of most apps. As long as a shortuct exists to the app on the card and the card is inserted, there shouldn't be a problem with syncing (if you're using Zlauncher anyway). That is based on my experience with several apps that i've used that way (Avantgo, Docs to Go, SecondScreenTV etc.). Zlauncher also has a host of other great features built in like a very useful file manager, the ability to launch some databases directly from the launcher w/o first launching the associated app, the ability to display image files as backgrounds in launcher tabs etc. It's a great launcher and I've used it all the way back to my first real PDA - the Handspring Visor. You can get a trial version here: http://www.zztechs.com/en/ I've found it to be worth paying for.

If you're not interested in adding a launcher (and Zlauncher is big), most apps will be recognized and launchable from the Plam/Launcher folder of your SD card from the built in Palm applications launcher. If you do this the same caution holds true about keeping enough internal memory available for the app to launch. Also, many newer apps have the ability to run their databases from the card when the app is installed to RAM. Sometimes the databases are a lot larger than the app itself and this can save significant space. These aren't necessarily pulled into RAM to run them. Where the database needs to be installed is dependent on the app. Usually you can find this info either in the manual that comes with the app or on a support site for the app. A lot of apps will recognize and launch their databases from the Palm/Launcher directory of the SD card. That's where Palm's Quickintall will send them to if you select "Install to Card". Some apps like to have their databases installed in the Palm/Programs directory in a folder named specifically for that app. Check the documentation for the app to see what it prefers.

Hope this helps.

I have my Palm set up with the program files installed in the internal memory and the data files and ebooks on my SD card. This setup has allowed the programs to run quickly and smoothly It also safeguards my data in times I may need to do a hard reset.

iSilo stores the ebooks in a folder on the SD card called Palm\Programs\isilo. Actually, the latest version of iSilo lets you browse to the folder you have saved the ebook files in.

I have not used any third party launcher on my device, so I cannot comment on how well they work. I have found the internal memory to be sufficient for the program files.
