How can I run long distance effectively and without hassle?

Heres the deal, I'm about to DEP into the Marines. I used to be able to run 5 miles non-stop, but I fell off the fitness wagon in 10th grade. I just graduated highschool and am starting to run again. I can go a mile anything after that I feel like I want to die. I'm in good health and have no disorders besides ADD but i see that more as a gift than a "disorder". BASICALLY how can I get back to my 5 mile runs and feel normal? Are there ANYY other cardio workouts that can help me build endurance.
