How can I reset the outside temperature gauge in a 2004 Toyota Corolla?

I've had my car for almost 5 years and never knew what the 2 dash marks (like this: --) were until a friend pointed that it's the outside temperature gauge. He messed with it and it showed OUTSIDE -22 F. There's nothing in the manual except to go to the dealership, but I was wondering if anyone knew what I could try to do first?
