how can I qualify that "man's ego is the fountainhead of human progress"?

I'm writing an essay where I have to qualifiy this quote and persuade the reader that "Man's ego is the fountainhead of human progress" This is the theme of Ayn Rand's book The Fountainhead. We have to present real life examples, that prove why this is true and I need one more :p please help.
