How can I play Sid Meier's Civilization 4 without the cd?

I downloaded the 1.61 and 1.74 patches that apparently are supposed to allow me to play civ 4 without the CD. Problem- Doesn't work. I have the latest of Windows Vista which I believe may be the problem with moving over the new exe. Any hep would be well appreciated. Thanks
