how can i makeover our old dining room set?

How can I redo this dining room table. I like the new, more modern feels, like the dark browns, espresso, and blacks. Most makeovers I have seen for the chairs have cushions, but our dining room chairs have no cushions. I am wondering what we can do to update this set for little cost. I am wondering if we should consider painting it. I feel like the oval shape of the chairs is still going to give that outdated look, what can i do!? any ideas....
