How can i make some money from photography?

Currently i am just an amateur looking to improve, but would like to see if i can make a little money from my photos. I know someone who makes a bit of cash from istockphoto - is this a good place to start? Are there sites that are similar but better? Do photos need to be unique to one site or can you put them on many? What subjects are good sellers?
Do you make money from your photos? What do you do?
